Dr. Wangen,
I am ashamed that this email is so overdue. I have no excuse-but today the procrastination has ended.
When I saw you for my migraines 2 years ago I felt as though I was making a “last ditch” effort. I had suffered since I was about 12 and the preceding 3 years had become unbearable. Many times over the years I had asked various healthcare providers if something I was eating was making me sick. EVERY single one of them told me that food allergies do not cause migraines.
I had had the same headache for about 8 months when I saw you. I was miserable. The headache before that had lasted 18 months. After our first meeting I had great hope. The three weeks I waited for my blood results seemed like forever.
I learned that my highest concerns were dairy, eggs, and sesame. I left your office a bit overwhelmed and wondering how on earth I was going to make these changes. I had a good cry in the car and then stopped for a cheese burger on a sesame seed bun on the way home. J I cried because I felt overwhelmed and also so relieved that there was something more I could try to get rid of the constant pain.
After that final cheeseburger I never looked back. I eliminated every single item that my blood testing indicated could be a problem. It was of course a huge challenge at first…..but absolutely worth it. After about 3 weeks my headaches started to lessen. It wasn’t every day anymore. After about 5 weeks I felt significantly better. That was all I needed to keep me going! My son (aged 8 at the time) noticed that mommy was more “fun”. He commented about how good it was that I wasn’t always in bed. Heartbreaking for me to hear, but he was right.
For about 16 months I was committed and did not stray from my new diet one tiny bit. I eventually decided to try one of my old favorites. I quickly learned that my digestive system no longer tolerated eggs and dairy. I also found that the next day was a headache lasting for 4-5 days. This seems to be a predictable pattern as I have tried a few other foods in the past 6 months. At this point I am not interested in trying to add back anything new, although I may consider having some Cream Brule on my birthday in August.
My headaches are not entirely gone. I still have a pretty serious headaches, sometimes migraines with my menstrual cycle and that is OK. I actually hardly mind- I know that this headache will last a day maybe 2 and that it will end. I previously had headaches that didn’t have endings. I do occasionally have a headache at other times. Just every now and then. It is tolerable and I can be confident that it will end which makes it much easier to cope.
When I think about the time and money spent over the years on EEG’s, MRI’s, CT scans, a cabinet full of prescription drugs, biofeedback, and more I want to scream! My neurologist at that time told me that there was nothing more he could do for me, he didn’t need to see me again.
All this to tell you how much I appreciate you! I couldn’t imagine it would ever end and it has. I appreciate everything you have helped me with. I have never given you a full report of my progress because I didn’t return to see you for a 6 month follow up- I felt so darn good! I should have so you would have feedback sooner and know that I was a success. THANK YOU!!!
My friends Lindsay W. and Lise V. have both seen you now. Neither for headaches though. I have been so happy to offer them some hope when talking about you. You are approaching IBS and migraines from such a logical direction. Lise is anxiously awaiting her test results and is excited about feeling better soon! I’m glad I can help her with recipes, etc. if some of her allergies are similar to mine.
Again, I apologize for taking so long to contact you. I really do appreciate you!

Darcie (February 2014)

My restless leg twitching that always would occur when I’m at the movies is gone. I only thought of this the day after I went to the movies. I recalled that “hey my legs didn’t twitch at all the whole time like they usually do”. I could never figure out why my legs would do that. Since I took the allergens out of my diet, i just don’t have the restless legs. This is huge for me. I was always so worried that i would irritate the person sitting next to me. Going to the clinic and getting tested for allergies is one of the smartest things I’ve ever done. The restless leg problem was an added benefit since I didn’t originally go there for that. I’m very thankful to the doctor and staff.

After seeing Dr. Wangen my life has improved to a degree I'm unable to express. I was in constant pain, unable to leave my house for fear of diarrhea and a lack of a bathroom, unwilling to even eat simple meals, and hopeless of ever resolving my situation. Its been 5 months since I saw Dr. Wangen and discovered I suffer from 16 food allergies. Though I now must follow a careful diet to control my problem I am in control of my life. Thats all I could have ever asked for. I had seen too many other doctors and specialist who had simply dismissed me to think this could work. Eventually my mother convinced me it was worth a shot. It was the decision that has made my life enjoyable again. The fact stays the same that my life is immeasurably better. As the months go by it's only getting easier.

You asked me to email after a month of my [food allergen-free] diet. WOW! I am absolutely amazed! For the first time in 30 + years, I have been virtually symptom-free for four weeks! As an added plus, I have lost ten pounds, and now weigh what I did in the 70's! I guess I can see what was keeping me from my optimum body weight - [my food allergy foods]. I love the lean feeling.
The most important thing is that I feel great! It was worth every penny to finally find out what has caused decades of discomfort. I still find myself half expecting to have problems again; it just seems incredible that it could all be that simple! I can't thank you enough, and I've told everyone I know what a great discovery I made while surfing the Internet!

I've been waiting ... until I had more consistent results to report. As I am sure you have heard often the process of completely altering your diet in our culture is frustrating and difficult and it has been extremely hard to avoid dairy, egg and wheat products. But after 6 months or so I finally have been able to truly say that I am doing it and the results are phenomenal. I am healthier, and fitter than I have been in years. Last year at this time a 5 mile easy bike ride was daunting. Now I am racing my bike twice a week. I guess I am a success story, and I don't really miss the foods I cant eat, but I do hate how high maintenance the diet is, particularly when it comes to eating out. But, the results are worth the pain. Thanks to you all for finally offering objective data to prove I wasn't just a loon.

When I first met Dr. Wangen, I was suffering with mysterious bladder pain. I decided there might be a food allergy connection and saw Dr. Wangen and was tested for food allergies. I have now been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, a painful illness that affects the bladder. My urologist agrees that eliminating the foods that cause inflammation is an important part of my treatment plan. After months of pain, I feel normal. The side benefit is that my skin glows and everyone who sees me comments on how well I look.
Thank you for providing this service to people. I want everyone to know that, although Dr. Wangen focuses on IBS, he can help with so many other illnesses as well. It is such a worth while investment to get this information about your body and Dr. Wangen's counseling and support is invaluable in finding substitutes for foods that should be eliminated.

Thank you!

It's hard to believe that it's been close to a year since I traveled to Seattle to meet you. Nearly a year later, I AM DOING SO GOOD!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
Perhaps you're thinking to yourself that this is just another success story - but, trust me this success is HUGE. My friends, family and local docs are all amazed and somewhat in awe of how much I've changed over the past year. Everyone says that I just LOOK heathier these days. When I think back to how miserable my life was before seeing you and how limited I was in considering future plans, I get a bit emotional just thinking about it all. It's truly been a transformation.  ....
My weight is been consistently stable at about 130# over the past year. I'm really looking forward to the warmth of spring/summer so that I can get outside and get more exercise....
My biggest upcoming challenge is a trip to Las Vegas over Mother's Day with a girlfriend. Trying to eat out 3 meals a day will be tough. I'm so used to eating at home and bringing my lunch to work. When I go visit my folks in Greeley, I literally bring my food with me. This is not quite so easy with airplane restrictions and a lack of a refrigerator in our hotel room. I'm sure I'll survive....just trying to figure out the logistics of getting something simple like a sweet potatoe or a grilled chicken breast for breakfast! This would be a great topic for you to cover in your next newsletter - HINT, HINT!
I wanted to tell you that I've really enjoyed reading your blog -I check it out every couple of weeks and catch up on your latest comments.   ....
Well, I'll quit rambling for now - just wanted to check in and provide an update. I hope that everything is going well for you and your family - and perhaps you're getting a good night's sleep every once in awhile. CONGRATS!!!

Take care,
Susan Saint Vincent

After years of illness, I was diagnosed in late 2004 with Celiac Disease (along with Thyroid disease, B-12 deficiency, and peripheral neuropathy) by a gastroenterologist. After treating all of those diseases, I felt much better (don’t get me wrong – I felt a hundred times better), but I was still not “normal”. My doctor basically implied that I should be thankful for how much better I was (which I was – I was finally able to function as a human being) and that the rest of my symptoms were just stress.
I met Dr. Wangen at a Celiac Support Group meeting where he talked about food allergies. I went to see him and got a food allergy panel and found out that I had several high level food allergies. After taking it all out of my diet, I am finally feeling like I thought I should. My acne even cleared up!
Even more than the treatment, I was glad that I saw Dr. Wangen simply because he was the first doctor to really listen to me and treat me like I was telling the truth. In getting my Celiac Disease diagnosis, I felt like I was constantly having to convince my doctors that I was really sick. It wasn’t until they finally found evidence of all of my problems that they realized that I was telling the truth! My gastroenterologist actually apologized to me after he got all my results back because he hadn’t taken me seriously. Dr. Wangen, on the other hand, was very supportive and seemed to really care if I got better. When I had an appointment, he was not trying to rush me in and out, and was willing to listen to my symptoms and look for a cause rather than handing me a prescription to get me out.
I have been so impressed that I have recommended him to several of my friends, who have all had good things to say. One of my friends called me after leaving his office and she was crying because someone actually believed her. Before seeing him, she had been told by her doctor that her symptoms were “all in her head” and had actually been referred to a psychiatrist! Now she knows that she had food allergies and her symptoms have improved tremendously.
I would recommend Dr. Wangen to anyone who feels sick and doesn’t know why. He is a great listener and will really work to find the problem!

I've been doing quite well by skipping all of my allergic foods. If I get a little milk or egg in accidentally I get flatulence and a bit of constipation three days later. All very manageable. I now require no extra fiber either. So you can count me as a great success, thanks. I'm delighted with the outcome.

After ten years of nearly constant pain, nausea and discomfort, Dr. Wangen and the IBS Treatment Center finally discovered the underlying cause of my diagnoses of Irritable Bowel Syndrome--I have food allergies. Sounds simple, but it has been a long journey. Dr. Wangen was my seventh doctor. The other doctors did dozens of tests with the end result of a diagnoses of IBS. But never a course of treatment, other than reduce stress, drink less coffee and avoid fatty foods. I was miserable.

With the identifying of specific foods that I am allergic to, I have modified my diet to exclude those foods. The major culprits are milk and eggs (with a number of others that I rarely eat). Eliminating milk and eggs is actually quite easy to do--there are a lot of substitutes that are entirely acceptable.

I feel great. I can now sleep up to 7 hours undisturbed--rarely did I get more than four hours of undisturbed sleep. I am mostly pain free. My ability to concentrate is greatly improved and the really odd IBS symptom of increased anxiety has plummeted. There are other minor symptoms that are either gone or greatly reduced.

I have only been following this treatment for about two months and I feel better every day. I expect that I will continue to improve.

Thank you Dr. Wangen!
Michael Paul

I came to Dr. Wangen after no one else could figure out what was wrong. I had severe abdominal pain and was on strong pain meds. Dr. Wangen discovered that I was having a reaction to the foods I was eating. Since then my pain is gone. I can’t thank him enough.

Along with the resolution of my pain was the enlightenment of how food allergies affect so many things in my general health. His enthusiasm for maintaining overall health made me much more aware of caring for myself.

I suffered from “IBS” for over twenty years, seeing a number of medical internists and general practitioners without results. In my first office visit to Dr. Wangen he was able to correctly diagnose me and get me started on a path to wellness. An allergy/sensitivity test, followed by a diet change, has made all the difference in the way I feel. I no longer need to take medications and am completely symptom free.
I appreciate Dr. Wangen’s professional and informative approach. He took the time with me to really understand the issues, something rare in the medical world today. I enthusiastically recommend Dr. Wangen to others who are IBS sufferers or who think they may have food related disorders.

My constipation is gone, blood pressure is down, energy is up and I feel great. Hallelujah!

I am a 43 year old female and I have been having stomach/digestive trouble since I was a baby. My mother used to say I had a “nervous stomach.” Well, things reached a peak when I was 39. I got to the point where I couldn’t eat or drink anything (even water) after 2:00 in the afternoon or I would be very nauseous and throw up. I spent a year going to the doctors. First my primary care doctor, then a gastroenterologist. They ran repeated tests and only determined that I had GERD.

After a year of throwing up 4 or 5 days out of every week (I lost 65 pounds), the gastroenterologist finally said, “I can’t do anything more for you. This is just what you have to live with.” Well, no way was I going to put up with that answer!!!

I made an appointment with Dr. Wangen and he immediately suggested that I might have food allergies. He took some blood for testing and while we waited for the results, he suggested that I give up wheat and dairy. Within 2 weeks I stopped being nauseous!!! The test showed that I was highly allergic to dairy, eggs, wheat and beef. All the things I had been eating. I was poisoning my body every day without realizing it!

Dr. Wangen gave me some very good literature on food allergies, told me of some cookbooks I could get to help me find alternative ways to cook, as well as prescribing herbs and vitamins to get my body healthy again.

It has been 3 years since I stopped eating the foods I am allergic to and I am so much better! No more Tums! No more Pepsid! No more drugs!!!!

I really feel that Dr. Wangen has saved my life; I no longer have to cancel vacations or invitations from friends because I am not feeling up to it. (You should have seen me on my honeymoon; I know every bathroom at Disneyland!) The quality of my life is so much better after seeing Dr. Wangen. I would (and do!) recommend him to anyone who is tired of having their MD just prescribe drugs to fix a symptom instead of trying to find out what is behind the symptom and treating the cause.

Dear Dr. Wangen, Thank you for finding the source of my problems. I am much happier and healthier thanks to your knowledge and caring. I truly believe health is the greatest wealth. You are a truly caring physician.

Leisa Nance

Dr. Wangen has worked with my whole family. I was so pleased with the results that I sent my kids and my grandchild to see Dr. Wangen. The food allergy test has helped each of us to identify exactly how we can feel better.
